If I had a superpower, it would be “can sleep in cars and planes indefinitely, especially if it is sunny.”
We drove to Park City, Utah last Friday for a long weekend ski trip with friends. It’s actually not that bad a drive from San Diego–it took ten-ish hours, and a good portion of the trip is on Interstate 15 through some really beautiful desert. It was made an even better drive by the fact that I slept roughly 75 percent of it. Really. I fell asleep not long after we pulled out of our driveway (like 7am), and with a few notable exceptions, slept the whole way through. Periodically, my wonderful husband/chauffeur would prod me and attempt to initiate a conversation, which would go something like this:
Him: Hey, look at those beautiful sandstone rocks!
Me: Wow!
… at which point I would immediately lose consciousness again until the next vista of pretty rocks.
This scenario repeated itself for who knows how long, until at one point we stopped for gas and I opted to get out and stretch my legs/neck, which in my unconscious state I had twisted into some really unpleasant variations of what might be called yoga. Rubbing my eyes, I looked around to try to gauge where we were and how far along we’d come and realized we were at… a petting zoo.
That’s right, I fell asleep for eight hours in the middle of the day and woke up at a petting zoo in Utah. Stranger things have happened, I guess.
So we took ten minutes out of our travels to go check out the Scipio, Utah petting zoo. There were a lot of random animals, but most of the pens were inaccessible and/or the animals were hiding. So we spent most of our time admiring a few really dirty lambs who were hopping around in their pen like this:
But the real star of the show was the zebra. A zebra! On the side of the road in Utah! This kind of stuff is what I live for.
After a few minutes of reassuring each other that it was, in fact, a zebra (on the side of the road! in Utah!), we left.
Hey look, pretty rocks!

I envy your superpower so much. Having cris-crossed the world by air about a dozen times recently, I wish I had your skills! But yes, I would have needed reassurance/an eye test if I woke up to see a zebra at a gas station in Utah ;0)
That last shot is so lovely. Have a blessed weekend.
Great photos! Love the little lamb chewing on his pen! Sweet!
Having just spent eight hours in a car myself I can relate to the sleeping and strange roadside stands.
that second shot is soo funny! Happy Easter!
Beautiful photos.
Regards and best wishes
The lambs little face is adorable and I can’t believe you saw a zebra on the side of the road in Utah! :) So random!
My wife and I stumbled across the petting zoo driving from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas. It’s quite a treat to stop and talk to the animals.
We also chatted with the owner and the animals are pretty much all rescues, from BLM burros to an ostrich saved from a burger farm. The zebra was apparently bought as a colt from one zoo that didn’t have space or needs, is being raised in Scipio, and will find a permanent home when grown.
Ah, that’s great to hear that the animals are rescues! Thanks for letting me know!
