Baby Pandas are Adorable Fuzzy Lumps of Boring

Today was giant panda cub Xiao Liwu’s public debut at the San Diego Zoo. Xiao Liwu, whose name means “Little Gift,” was moved to his outdoor habitat yesterday, where he did all kinds of adorable baby animal stuff for the media.

Now, I’m no expert, but my understanding of pandas is that they do three things:

  1. Eat;
  2. Sleep;
  3. Drape themselves over tree branches.

So when I saw the video of the baby panda romping around, I figured I’d head over to the zoo this morning to watch the rare feat that is panda activity.

This morning, though, he was over it.

Apparently nicknamed “Sausage” by zoo staff, the pudgy little fluff ball couldn’t have cared less about his adoring fans, and napped pretty much straight through the public viewing time. Jerk.

Although it’s not like pandas really do much even when they aren’t sleeping, the adults seemed to be jealous of all the attention little Sausage was getting, and they hammed it up, in true panda fashion, by eating and draping themselves across trees.

Xiao Liwu’s enclosure at the San Diego Zoo is open to the public from 9:30am-11:30am daily.

    Though sausage slept through your visit you still got a fun photo of him and the other pandas. Fun!
