This day in 2011: El Morro, San Juan, Puerto Rico
A year ago today, five of my best girlfriends accompanied me to San Juan, Puerto Rico for my bachelorette party. Our weekend of food and drink and sunshine was briefly punctuated by an educational trip to the El Morro fort. Its full name is a mouthful--Castillo de San Felipe del Morro--so you can see why it's commonly shortened. It was built in the 16th century by the Spanish and attacked many times over the following century.
The fort is just teeming with interesting visuals. I especially enjoyed the crumbly texture of the decaying walls juxtaposed with the smooth arches of the ceilings and doorways.
