The TBM/TBF Avenger wreck in Anacapa with two rebreather divers on it.

Photo of the Week: Grumman TBF Avenger Airplane Wreck

About a mile offshore of Anacapa Island, in about 120′ of water, rests the wreck of the TBF Avenger. The Navy torpedo bomber went down in 1944 after it crashed into another plane in the formation during a training exercise.

There’s not a whole lot of the plane left–we joked that it was being held together by brittle stars–but you can still make out the shape of it, even with the nose long gone.

I feel like diving plane wrecks is somewhat like diving submarine wrecks in that there’s really not all that much to see. Subs are basically just metal tubes, and planes–planes are tiny. But airplane wrecks, like submarine wrecks, are just cool.

Just plain cool, if you will.

Was that bad? That was bad.

I have quite a few more photos of the TBF Avenger wreck to share later this week, but I’ll leave you with just this one for now!
